Trenodia
Until very recently the ancient practice of trenodìa (ritual crying) was common in Southern Italy. Dedicated not only to death, but to various social crises, it had a repairing and regenerating function for the community. In 2019, the brothers Mariangela and Vinicio Capossela proposed an update to this practice by extending it to the broader concept of “cultural death”, staging a ten day traveling public art performance, with the active participation of citizens from eight countries and three regions. Between painting, music and ritual, the film poetically tells the story of the processions between timeless landscapes, from the coast of Calabria to the Sassi of Matera.
